I know someone who does this using elmers glue on the back of the wet paper, blotting most of the moisture off first. Don't soak for too long. Then he places it face down on newsprint and weights it overnight to dry. When finished he cuts the pape...

Bill, I was wondering how the big piece that you were working on turned out? Just had my ego stroked, I won a money award in the Tallahasse TriState Competition. That give me signature status in that organazation. Go to their web site if you are interested in seeing the piece. (Tallahasseewatercolorsociety.com). Good luck on your show. I'm busy getting ready for ISS. Sincerely, Autry Dye

Hi, Bill -- Topher Schink told me to soak it, let it dry maybe 5 minutes because it's still shrinking after you first take it out of the water, and then you stretch it. You may have to use something like bulldog clips or grippy things with a larger grabbing area than staples. Seems like staples don't grip well enough because they just punch little holes. You need a big, gripped area, like from a bulldog clip or a screwing kind of setup. And you have to use a lot of them. Try this on a small piece first and try the 5 minute thing and see if it works. Regarding Taos, yes I'm going! Are you? It's a financial stretch but I'm going. I'm sharing a room this time and sharing a car, and that will make it easier. But I want to go. How are you????

Hi Bill:

Of course I remember you. Wow! Sounds like a big project. I never wet my paper first. Just found it wasn't necessary. I would staple the paper dry to the support. But, I like the ideas Autry gave you. Please post the final painting. Would love to see it.

Bill, just a Post Script to what I already said, there is so much tension in a large piece of paper that you must space the staples close together. No further apart than the space of the staple and come in from the edge about a half inch all around. That should solve the problem of the paper pulling away. Hope it helps. Autry

Bill, good to hear from you. Will you be in Taos this year? I can hardly wait. From looking at you images, it's plain to see that you are perfecting those patterns you were working on last year. As to your question of working in a large format with watercolor, yes I have. I have use the roll and the elephant size 140 Arches paper. My problem was soaking it first, so I purchased a tall plastic container and had a plug put in the botton to drain the water out when I was finished soaking. I loosely rolled the paper and soaked for thirty minutes or so before I stapled it to my support. I used a product called Homoste board. It is a building material used up north and I believe artists who make stain glass use it as a support when piecing their work together. It accepts the staples well and is easy to remove when you have finished your project. I ALWAYS lay it flat so it will dry evenly. You can certainly staple to your door, but I would be concerned about the even drying, unless you remove the door and lay it flat. The Homoste board accepts regular office staples. Hope that isn't to much info. Autry Dye

Hi, Bill! Thanks for your note. I've been meaning to write you, so thank you for posting your note to me. In Taos, I don't think I saw any of your paintings, so I managed to look at your art on this site. It looks great! I like your loose style. I like all your paintings you are showing here. I was just thinking that El Capitan has been captured in photos and paintings probably a whole lot, but I'll bet hardly ever in loose, colorful, drippy watercolor like yours...I like your rendition of El Capitan. And I like your Bodega buildings, too. By the way, Topher Schink is going to have a 'show' at Pelican Gallery in downtown Petaluma (On Petaluma Blvd., just south of Washington), starting about June 17 or June 18 or something like that. I don't know if it's posted yet on their website (pelicanart.com I think) but look for it. If you come see it, let me know. We are out of town June 5 - June 16, so maybe we could get together after that -- maybe around Topher's show? thanks !! so nice to hear from you and thank you again for the lift to the airport !! megan

Hi Bill,
I painted the self-portrait last fall to use in my website and blog. This was my second attempt at capturing a likeness of me. I had just returned from traveling in Italy with my sister, so the first painting actually looked much more like her than like me. I guess looking at her day-in and day-out for 4 weeks really imprinted her face in my brain.
I really enjoyed meeting you, too, Bill. As we talked about, you should think about coming north for a visit. There are many beautiful landscapes right out my doorway!
I have not painted at all since returning home. I am leaving for Hawaii next Tuesday, so have put all my energy into getting things packed up and shipped for my art show and workshop I'm teaching there. When I get back, I'll start processing all the Taos stuff. I'm interested to see how it influences my work.
Good luck with your gallery connections. I hope you become exceedingly successful! I look forward to seeing your work post-Taos.
Fondly, Margaret
